An important factor in increasing productivity and optimal use of resources in mechanical engineering production is the effective organization of material flows. Under the conditions of the modern production systems, alternative technological processes for machining parts often exist, which creates opportunities for more flexible production planning, complicating, at the same time, material flows and equipment load management.
The present article examines the possibilities for material flows optimization in a section for machining, in order to increase the efficiency of the production system. It analyzes the peculiarities of the organization of production in the presence of multiple technological routes and different types of machine tools and proposes an approach for modeling the production area by representing the technological processes as a graph and a matrix of the material flows between the individual workplaces. A multi-objective optimization problem is formulated, aimed at minimizing the transport distances, technological times and volume of the work in progress.
